Virtue of Patience

Early sunlight flickers
golden on your skin
highlights of the lash
burning from the night before
echoes of your cries
while you lie sleeping

Gentle kisses
on your closed eyes
retracing the tears
that only love can kiss away
as the torment of pain
subsides and the throb
of urgent desire begins

I watch you sleeping
and remember
behind the gently closed lashes
the blue eyes of surrender
to the cold words of denial
making you wait that little bit longer
for pleasure and pain to mingle
into the cacophony
of pure delight

And they say patience is a virtue
the domain of the righteous
and pure of deed
yet we both know
patience burns with a wicked flame
fueled by lust and sin
