Laurens Alma Tadema, better known as Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, was one of the most highly renowned Romantic artists of the late 19thC. He changed the spelling of his name to the more English Lawrence while making his niche in the art world. He also made his middle name ‘Alma’ part of his surname so he would be listed in the A section of exhibition catalogues. After his death in 1912, his work was largely ignored and only reappeared in the public eye in the 1960s.

A Favourite Custom is a Romantic genre painting in oil on canvas. It is currently located at the Tate Modern in London.
