David Bowie: The Jean Genie

David Bowie

David Bowie 1947 – 2016

David Robert Jones, better known as David Bowie, was a singer, songwriter and actor. He was renowned as a leading figure of innovative and popular music from his first album in 1967 until his death in 2016. In a fight over a girl, he was punched in the eye resulting in an injury that left him with a fully dilated pupil giving the false impression of a change of colour in the iris. This was later to become one of Bowie’s most recognisable features.

Originally released in 1972, The Jean Genie was the lead single on the album Aladdin Sane. According to Bowie, it was ‘a smorgasbord’ of imagined Americana, with a protagonist based on Iggy Pop. The title is an allusion to the author Jean Genet.
