Jose Vela Zanetti was a painter and muralist. He worked predominantly in Spain, the Dominican Republic and the USA. His first solo exhibition was held in Leon in 1931. His father was executed for his socialist beliefs in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. In 1939, at the end of the war, Zanetti and other artists went into exile in the Dominican Republic. He returned to Spain in 1960 and lived in the house where he was born until his death in 1999.
