Balassi Stanza Notes

Believed to be the preferred stanza form of the Hungarian poet Balint Balassi the original stanza consisted of three lines of 19 syllables each. The use of internal rhymes evolved the stanza to the rhyme scheme below:

x. x. x. x. x. a.
x. x. x. x. x. a.
x. x. x. x. x. x. d
x. x. x. x. x. b
x. x. x. x. x. b
x. x. x. x. x. x. d
x. x. x. x. x. c
x. x. x. x. x. c
x. x. x. x. x. x. d

Example: Warrior by Jez Farmer

He’s the one who did not
Quit; he took the one shot
That makes a man true to self
His pants are not outside
His jeans; he’s naught to hide
He stands tall and never stealth
For he has faced the pain
And danced free in the rain
His own truth greater than wealth
