Fireside Tales

Form: Ballade
Should the eyes stretch to see a star
While thoughts are caught out by the night
Or a moment taken too far
As eyes behold the stars in sight
And dreams soar like a bird in flight
While ears listen to tales of old
Around the fire burning bright
Like stories the old ones have told

The wise owl calls to the nightjar
Awaiting his mate by moonlight
The warrior lights his cigar
Without a care nor fear of sleight
Tonight there’ll be no foe to fight
Just food and beer while tales unfold
Of women and war, shared delight
Like stories the old ones have told

Another man takes his guitar
And sings of love in pure delight
The warrior sees from afar
His maiden by the candlelight
And to his love he takes his flight
Old as time, love is theirs to hold
As in his arms he holds her tight
Like stories the old ones have told

He’s out of time in modern sight
But in her love, he can be bold
For he is hers throughout the night
Like stories the old ones have told
