Time to Breath

We are often told to take a deep breath when things don’t go our way. There is a lot to be said for that. Breathing is an essential action for life and the spiritual life is no different – it needs time to breathe.

As mundane and ordinary as breathing may seem to be it is that normal, everyday, that makes a deep breath both grounding and calming. It is for that reason breathing is the basis of many spiritual disciplines. By focusing on our breathing we can focus on acquiring and directing the spiritual and magical energies within ourselves.

Breathing itself is an energy of life, it flows in and out easily and we rarely think about it. The flow of oxygen awakens the body and, quite naturally, the spiritual energy also awakens along with the physical and mental. To the inner spirit a deep breath is as powerful as a cup of coffee first thing in the morning.

Deep breathing has health benefits too. It helps the body relax, it nourishes the blood with oxygen and keeps us alive. It is hard to imagine something so simple and basic goes such a long way. The spiritual and magical life requires breathing to be a focused practice and meditation makes us focus on how we breath. By following the pattern of our breathing we become aware if is short and shallow or deep and penetrating, we notice its rhythm and regularity, and we can feel how deep it reaches into our bodies.

The elements of the sacred circle begin and end in the east, symbolically corresponding to the elements of air, perhaps it is somewhat fitting that a witch practices meditation as part of their spiritual journey as it is an act of empowerment.
