Title: Portrait of Émile Zola
Media: Oil on canvas
Location: Musée d’Orsay, Paris, France
This painting of Émile Zola by Édouard Manet was submitted to the 1868 Salon. Zola was well-known for his art criticism, particularly in his novel Thérèse Raquin, a story of adultery between Thérèse, the wife of clerk and Laurent, a would-be painter. Laurent’s work is denigrated by the critics, much like that of Zola’s friend, Cézanne.
