Beach of the Dangast with Flying Boat by Franz Radziwill

Title: Beach of the Dangast with Flying Boat
Date: 1929
Movement: Magic Realism
Media: Oil on canvas
Location: State Museum for Art and Cultural History, Oldenburg, Germany

Radziwill lived in Dangast from 1923. He was both enamoured and reticent about the encroaching technology in the small bay town off the North Sea. The ambivalence was often evident in his paintings. Here in a quiet beach scene an airplane flies into the scene and combined with otherworld lighting and strange rocks on the beach it is an exemplary work of Radziwill’s Magic Realism.
