Sposalizio del Mare

Form: Burns’ Sonnet

A city of islands inspiring art
His Gothic palace still stands tall and proud
A landmark for our modern eyes to chart
Where history echoes out to the crowd
The royal barge in crimson and gold cast
Setting out to the sea on Ascension Day
A marriage made from the water way
This ceremonial duty long past
The ring was blessed within a scared vow
The sea and the city as one will rule
As he threw the ring into the sea pool
To both city and sea, he made his bow
Now all that remains is a man in paint
A time gone yet in modern minds so quaint

Doge Leonardo Loredan by Giovanni Bellini
Oil on poplar
1501-02
Current location: National Gallery, London, UK
