Look at Me

Form: Free Verse

I don’t want to celebrate that day
it’s not my birthday
it’s not my anniversary
it’s just the day I let my labels be seen
labels of sexuality and gender
the things I cannot change
and cannot deny
they are not who I am
just labels that screamed out my pain
as my world crashed around me
and I surrendered to the truth of me
now the scars remain
like a tattoo of what was
blazoned across my chest
a battle lost and a warrior born
it’s not a celebration
it’s survival
look at me
I am what survival looks like
