Her needle moves in a motion of fine art A bourgeoisie lady in Versailles’ halls Stitches of colour passing the time Before dressing to stun at palace balls With the king who stole her heart A lady of taste in all that is fine This patron of arts with an eye for style From dresses and furs to canvas and paint A gracious Madame there is no denial She’s taking delight in Rococo design Such a fine woman to love a king Taking her place in the courtly scene His mistress and lover is quite the thing But the lady would never be his queen
Madame de Pompadour at her Tambour Frame by François-Hubert Drouais, 1763-4, oil on canvas. Currently housed in the National Gallery, London, UK
