Sonnet to a Robin

Form: Raven’s Rovi Sonnet 69

One to another they passed the message
On an autumn breeze hidden in a song
In golden hues of the winter’s presage
And the birds whistle and flute on the wing
Some flying south, some simply staying here
‘See you next year’, maybe that’s what they sing
As the leaves float around, ‘see you next year’
There’s no telling what the winter may bring
With home fires burn chimneys gather the soot
As always the dark nights endlessly long
Still we share the tales of a bygone age
And the wee chap in red chirps somewhere near
The friendly robin is one to stay put
On frosty mornings and snow is afoot
