Mental Grit

Form: Chivalric Sonnet

The sudden sharpness within a deep breath
When standing up as the others sit down
The burning heat that simmers in the eyes
They gaze back at those who left me to drown
Is it courage or silent defiance?
The silence in the refusing to cry
Even when my body is left bleeding
And to get back up with my head held high
Is courage facing the next step forward
On a new path never trodden before
No matter the wanting to look behind
Back into doubt but this journey means more
Perhaps courage, a thing we all hold dear,
Is the facing it, whatever the fear
