The elemental force of water represents the origins of the world in many of the mythologies from around the globe. Most commonly water myths involving the theme of life springing forth from the churning chaos of the dark waters of an abyss. Often the mythical imagery is supported by real-life facts and vice versa. Life on Earth emerged and evolved from organisms that thrived in watery, swamp environments. As we moved out of the swamplands we learned to take water with us.
Water is also the embryonic habitat in which we all developed in within our mothers’ womb. We need water to sustain life. Water is more than 80% of the human body and without refills of water our lives would quickly grind to a halt.
Symbolically water is representative of intuition, dreams and visions, the depths of the unconscious mind, the cycles of nature and the mysteries of womanhood. Water is the flow of energy, the movement of the seasons and life. It teaches us that existence is cyclical and tidal. It sits in the west of the sacred circle and witches associate the west with endings, transitions and death, therefore water symbolizes these things too.
