Example

On the Way Down by Jez Farmer

In darkness whispers kept talking to me
And whispers echoed around in my mind
A growling roar that once was far behind
In the realms of a childhood fantasy
Those days before my soul walked strong and free
When the future dreams were not mine to find
My heart was lost, afraid and running blind
Afraid of living my life, to be me
Until destiny came and called me out
Ignored whispers began to scream and shout
The dawning rays of a different day
For all things must change from the days of old
To face the future a man must be bold
And listen to what whispers really say

Date with Fate by Jez Farmer

There is a day I know will come
It could be near, it could be far
It will come like a twinkling star
And Lady fate will take me home
No matter where I’ve gone to roam
I may not say an au revoir
Or complete writing my memoir
She’ll be waiting, a silent drum
That keeps the beat of earthly time
I’ll be young, old, or in my prime
Only she knows the how and when
The sands of time have run their course
So my soul must be ready then
For her scythe to take my life’s force

Example

Spanner’s Delight by Jez Farmer

He sits outside while they drink tea
And eat iced chocolate cake
While the cold winds make his body ache
He doesn’t complain, waits to see
Who comes out first to set him free
Not that it matters, he will shake
From nose to tail he’ll be awake
A good dog, he knows loyalty
His feathered tail, strokes back and forth
His black nose lifted to the north
As he watches the teashop doors
They walk together, hand in hand
And his tail wags something grand
They love again, and he shares paws

Example

The Blissful Brew by Jez Farmer

One simple desire and it’s this
A properly brewed cup of tea
It’s simple, not hit or miss
A teaspoon, a pot, let it be
A simple way to bring me bliss
Deep amber tones awaken me
Assam scents like a sensual kiss
Releasing my mind, thinking free
Thus ready for work, rest, or play
Facing the challenge, a new day
I don’t need my breakfast in bed
To wake me up, tea is the way
Then kiss me, make my senses sway
It’s tea and love, I think, ‘nuff said

French Sonnet V

Example

Across My Big Brass Bed by Jez Farmer

A Friday night in the lockdown
And my eyes stare at the neat stack
Of Bob Dylan CD’s; alone
A evening in, I’ll hear each track
Drinking beer in a dressing gown
With each song making me look back
‘It’s Alright Ma’, not feeling down
The hippie child don’t see no black
The hippie child seems long ago
I didn’t know where the winds blow
And life just seemed to be a joke
Just listening and drinking beer
And I ain’t got nothing to toke
Oh how they times have changed, my dear

French Sonnet VI

Structure: Octave and sestet
Meter: Octasyllabic or tetrameter
Rhyme Scheme: abababab ccdeed

Example

On Afternoon Tea

The laced Swiss cheese that I like best
With delicate layered ham on soft bread
With creamy butter thinly spread
And china plates sparkle and jest
While potted tea takes on its rest
On the table the books to be read
And her needle is wanting thread
While fresh baked scents from the scone nest
My hand begins to pour the tea
A cup for her and one for me
She embroiders, I read my book
Afternoon tea is thus complete
A sandwich and a sweeter treat
And a cuppa is all it took

Example

Love Unwound by Jez Farmer

I miss too much hearing her voice
The constant nagging in my ear
My silent answers without choice
Seen as a definitive yes dear
I called it love, mine to rejoice
Even embrace; instead of fear
Acquiescence just for her smile
It kept me going for awhile
But the fear in me turned around
And the chains of love came unwound
The choice I made to move forward
Away from her smile, no longer bound
To a place I cannot be found
By the voice I should have ignored

French Sonnet VIII

Example

‘Til Death Do Us Part by Jez Farmer

My heart was forever broken
When the cemetery gates closed
No more words of love are spoken
It wasn’t so long since I proposed
With a ring as my love’s token
And love conquered all, I supposed
With eyes so bright and lashes long
My heart knew love couldn’t be wrong
We forgot to consider fate
And her plans behind the church gate
And my tears congealed in the rain
To a better place she has gone
She’s free from tears and free from pain
And alone I must carry on

French Sonnet IX
Structure: Octave and sestet
Meter: Octasyllabic or tetrameter

Example

Insomniac Witterings by Jez Farmer

Outside the night silent and still
Echoes with my sleepless thoughts
The thinkings that go on until
My mind and pills are in cohorts
And dreams with memories refill
Sleep or no sleep I’m out of sorts
A broken soul drifting through time
And living now a surreal mime
Sad memories bring the dawn light
A dim farewell to shards of night
A yawning breath making the tea
To welcome the day being alone
No whispers of love for love’s flown
Instead the warming cup hugs me
