Strangers Passing By

Form: Free Verse

Just two strangers sharing glances
then saying hello
when we crossed paths
on my way to work
on your way home
hellos became coffees
mingled with laughs
and stories of our days
of times before we met
before I was born
of your old days in the war
and you’d smile with memories
of making history
in those dark days
yet your eyes lit up in the telling
you’d chat to anyone
anyone who cared enough to listen
and we all loved you
but the laughter stopped
and I didn’t see you today
nor yesterday
nor the day before
so asking around the coffee shop
calling the number
‘Have you seen William’
you had passed away
my lovely stranger was gone
but I remember you William
every day as I stop for coffee
always a coffee
and my friend, William
